Angie’s love of animals started at an early age, but she grew up as a city slicker in a mobile Navy family so she was not able to adopt her first dog until she was 13 and her family had settled in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a Westie who, of course, loved her mom! But after an externship with a mixed animal veterinary practice in Maryland during her senior year in high school, Angie knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the pre-veterinary program at Clemson University, and then completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University in 1999. After a year of a small animal medical and surgical internship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000, she stayed at Penn for an internal medicine residency and an additional year as a clinical instructor. She became a Board-certified Small Animal Internist in 2004. Her husband, Dr. Matt Nicholson, was in her intern class at Penn and completed his small animal surgical residency there. Angie and Matt were married in 2003.
After two years in private practice in New Jersey, Angie and Matt joined a busy specialty referral center in northern Virginia. Angie served as their Internal Medicine Director, mentoring several interns and a resident, and was on the Board of Directors for several years. Angie and Matt were blessed with a daughter in 2012, and Angie now consults with a telemedicine group and The Small Animal Clinic at Piedmont Equine. She helps with patient management in the field of internal medicine, and performs and reviews ultrasounds.
Angie and Matt live in Haymarket with their daughter and two pooches, Tatum and TJ.
