Gretchen Verheggen

Dr. Gretchen Verheggen was born and raised in an historic farmhouse in Zionsville, PA. While she only fulfilled her childhood dream of owning her own horse at the age of 22, with a Thoroughbred named Silent Applause, she learned to ride a horse before she mastered riding a bike. She was led to work with horses again, though this time on the ground, during her undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, while working with children with developmental disabilities through equine-assisted therapies. Her special interest in diagnostic imaging also blossomed while working as a research assistant at Vanderbilt’s Institute of Imaging Science, developing novel imaging techniques for detection and staging of human cancers.

Gretchen is a recent graduate of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where she worked as a student technician in the Imaging Department. She continued to broaden her knowledge base in diagnostic imaging, serving as President of the Radiology Club and publishing continuing education content for Pfizer-Zoetis VeritasDVM in ultrasonography.

Gretchen’s clinical interests include diagnostic imaging and sports medicine, as well as emergency/critical care. Following completion of her time with Piedmont, she hopes to pursue further specialization with a residency in radiology. When she’s not in the clinic or on the road, Gretchen is an avid kite-flying enthusiast, amateur songwriter, and an aspiring polyglot. She and her Lynx-point Siamese, Radar, already feel right at home in the beautiful Virginia wine-and-horse-country.

Update on Gretchen- She is the Resident Fellow in Large Animal Cardiology & Ultrasound in the Department of Sports Medicine & Imaging at New Bolton Center under Drs. Virginia Reef and JoAnn Slack. All the best to her!
