After moving to North Carolina in 2003 she realized that there was no rehabilitation center for local shorebirds that swallow fish hooks, get tangled in nets, or are otherwise injured or orphaned. Local animal control and turtle rescue volunteers encouraged her to care for these injured birds. After volunteering at the SC Center for Birds of Prey and the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter to gain experience, Mary Ellen obtained the appropriate State and Federal permits to open Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter. We are proud to be associated with Sea Biscuit and Dr. Travis is glad to donate as much of her supplies, services, and expertise as she can to support this extremely worthwhile local non-profit organization.
