Does your dog suffer from allergies? Allergies, especially environmental allergies from pollens, grass, weeds, trees, and the like affect so many dogs it is staggering. Your dog is not alone…Generally speaking, the majority of appointments we see for dogs in the spring through fall season have at least in part to do with environmental allergies.
Other dogs suffer from food allergies and many suffer from both food and environmental allergies. In the past we typically had to utilize corticosteroids, such as prednisone, to help these pets. Often this lead to side effects that, in many cases, became intolerable for the pet and their owners.
Cytopoint is a new ant-allergy option. This therapy targets a cytokine in the body called interleukin-31. By doing so, it prevents or greatly reduces the signals sent by the IL-31 to the brain that causes a pet to want to itch. Cytopoint is a monoclonal antibody that specifically targets this IL-31 and as a result has no expected side effects in pets and is safe to use with other therapies and even in pets with other diseases or conditions.
Cytopoint is naturally removed from the body through normal protein metabolism and does not have an impact on the liver or kidneys like many medications can.
Cytopoint is given as a subcutaneous injection only once every 4 to 8 weeks based on response and thus prevents having to give pills to your dog every day. It is extremely well tolerated and should not cause anything worrisome to happen with your dog.
