Dental Disease and Your Furry Friends

Did you know that pets get dental disease just like you and me? Most owners are unaware of this fact.  Who looks in their pet’s mouth anyway?  Dental disease is painful and can create problems with the rest of the body’s organs.

One of the main focus’s when you bring your pet into a veterinary hospital is their mouth.  We check their mouth for dental disease.  There are 4 stages to dental disease.  It is recommended to perform dental cleanings at the earlier stages , for example stage one or two to help prevent getting to Stage 4 dental disease which always requires extractions along with pain medication and antibiotics.

There are ways to help prevent dental disease in your pet.  The best way is to brush the teeth daily with a soft bristled toothbrush and pet safe toothpaste.  It is not safe to use human toothpaste as it contains fluoride which is not meant to be swallowed.  There are special dental foods and special water additives to help deter tartar formulation along with special chews to treat your pet!

Please make sure to check your pets teeth (if safe to do so) and if you see any tartar build up or smell any foul odors consult your veterinarian!
