Holiday Treats for Your Dog

By November 14, 2016 January 24th, 2018 Harmony Blog

Cute pug puppy enjoying a doggie muffin on his 1st birthday. We all want our pets to experience the tasty treats we cook during the holidays, but that can often lead to some serious side effects due to the rich calorie content and high fat of our human food. Dogs do much better with a lower fat content and lower calorie treat. Dr. Regis has shared one of her favorite canine friendly recipes for the holidays.

Apple, Banana and Turkey Breast Muffins

1 cup yogurt

1 cup turkey breast (can use nitrate-free lunch meat here), chopped

3 medium bananas, very ripe

2 teaspoons baking powder

4 cups unbleached flour (use 4 cups chickpea, coconut or almond flour for grain-free)

2/3 cup olive oil

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon powdered sage (optional)

1 cup chicken broth

4 eggs, with shells

3 medium apples, peeled and grated (remember no seeds)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Place yogurt, bananas, chicken broth, olive oil and whole eggs in a blender and blend until smooth. Combine the unbleached flour, baking powder, sage and cinnamon. Mix the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients. Mix in the turkey breast and grated apples. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
